The Tartaria map is not just a geographical representation — it's a symbol of a lost empire Map of independent Tartary (in yellow) and Chinese Tartary (in violet), in 1806. This is a scan of the map from the 1575 edition of Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, first published in 1570 and republished many times between 1571 and 1641
